Ponieważ nie mam czasu, ale też ochoty, by siedzieć stale przed monitem komputera lub przed telewizorem, korzystam często z podpowiedzi znajomych. Jedna z moich koleżanek bardzo dobrze wie, jaki rodzaj filmów lubię, dlatego poleca mi czasami filmy, które mogłyby mnie zainteresować. I przyznaje bez bicia, że trafia w mój gust znakomicie. Podpowiedziała mi już kilka filmów, które z radością obejrzałem (niestety nie napisałem nic na ich temat, ale może jeszcze to zrobię). Ostatnio zwróciła moją uwagę na film dokumentalny, nakręcony przez samego martina Scorsese.
To film będący montażem rozmów przeprowadzonych przez różnych prowadzących (w tym zarówno znanych aktorów (Alec Baldwin), reżyserów (Spike Lee), a w znacznej części przez samego Scorsese) z niezwykłą Fran Lebowitz. To nie było pierwsze spotkanie wielkiego reżysera z jedną z Fran, albowiem już wcześniej, w 2010 roku powstał document “Public Speaking”. Fran Lebowitz jest jednak na tyle intrygująca, że najwyraźniej reżyser musiał nakręcić kolejny document, w którym wiele razy widać jak bardzo lubi samą pisarkę, ale też jak dobrze się bawi w jej towarzystwie.
I to samo spotka wszystkich, którzy zasiądą przed telewizorem i włączą document zatytułowany “Udawaj, że to miasto”, dostępny na kanale Netflix. To tylko siedem blisko półgodzinnych odcinków, ale zabawa jest znakomita. Fran Lebowitz to bowiem niesamowita gaduła, ale też osoba o wyjątkowo ostrym, krytycznym spojrzeniu na świat, obdarzona umiejętnością krytycznego myślenia i wypowiadania się na wiele tematów. Głównym tematem jest miasto Nowy Jork (ulice, metro, budynki, księgarnie, tablice na chodnikach, ale też jego mieszkańcy). Fran nie ma dla nikogo i niczego litości, w niezwykły sposób punktuje najprzeróżniejsze absurdy. Podobnie jest w przypadku licznych innych tematów, dotyczących młodzieży, telefonów, celebrytów, sztuki i literatury. Nie ma tu poprawności politycznej, jest zdecydowane wyrażanie opinii, jasnych, prostych, czytelnych. Ale to nie bezmyślne hejtowanie, szermowanie bzdurnymi hasłami. Za każdą ciętą riposte, odpowiedzią, opowieścią kryją się mądre słowo. To prawdziwa krytyka, a nie krytykanctwo. To pokaz niezwykłej erudycji, mądrości, niezależności, otwartego umysłu.
Słuchając wypowiedzi Fran Lebowitz śmiejemy się, a jednocześnie przytakujemy głową. “Tak, tak właśnie jest! Ale to zgrabnie ujęła! Ma rację. W pełni się zgadzam” – takie zdania co chwila padały z moich ust podczas oglądania tego filmu. Takich ludzi nam trzeba, żeby poświadczali, że w tym dziwnym, chorym, zideologizowanym i coraz bardziej zdehumanizowanym świecie są jeszcze jednostki, które widzą, wiedzą i powiedzą, co myślą o naszym zwariowanym świecie. I zrobią to z taką klasą, w taki dosadny, cyniczny sposób. Dobrze, że są jeszcze mądrzy ludzi przedkładający książki nad internet i myślenie nad wymyślanie.
Jak sama twierdzi lenistwo nie pozwoliło jej na napisanie za wielu książek. Żadna z nich nie została przetłumaczona na polski. Mam zatem nadzieję, że po tym filmie zostanie to szybko nadrobione!
A film powinni obejrzeć wszyscy. Bez wyjątku!

Since I do not have the time, but also the desire to sit constantly in front of the computer screen or in front of the TV, I often use the suggestions of my friends. One of my friends knows very well what kind of films I like, so she recommends me films that might interest me. And she admits without hitting that it meets my taste perfectly. She already advised me on a few movies that I enjoyed watching (unfortunately I didn’t write anything about them, but maybe I’ll do it soon). Recently, she drew my attention to a documentary made by Martin Scorsese.
This film is a montage of interviews conducted by various hosts (including both famous actors (Alek Baldwin), directors (Spike Lee), and largely by Scorsese himself) with the remarkable Fran Lebowitz. It was not the first meeting of a great director with Fran, because the document „Public Speaking” had already been made in 2010. However, Fran Lebowitz is so intriguing that apparently the director had to make another documentary, in which you can see many times how much he likes the writer, but also how much he enjoys in her company.
And the same will happen to everyone who sits in front of the TV and plays the document entitled „Pretend It’s a City”, available on the Netflix channel. It’s only seven close to half an hour episodes, but the fun is great. Fran Lebowitz is an amazing talker, but also a person with an extremely sharp, critical view of the world, endowed with the ability to think critically and express herself on many topics. The main topic is the city of New York (streets, subways, buildings, bookstores, sidewalk boards, but also its inhabitants). Fran has no mercy for anyone or anything, and she points out the most absurdities in an extraordinary way. The same is true of many other topics, including youth, telephones, celebrities, art and literature. There is no political correctness here, there is strong expression of opinions, clear, simple, readable. But this is not mindless hating, fencing with nonsense. There is a wise word behind every sharp retort, answer, story. This is real criticism. It is a show of extraordinary erudition, wisdom, independence and an open mind.
Listening to Fran Lebowitz’s speech, we laugh and nod our head at the same time. “Yes it is! But she put it neatly! She is right. I fully agree ”- such sentences kept coming out of my mouth while watching this movie. We need such people to testify that in this strange, sick, ideologized and more and more dehumanized world there are still individuals who see, know and say what they think about our crazy world. And they will do it with such class, in such a blunt, cynical way. It’s good that there are still smart people who prefer books over the internet and thinking over inventing.
As she herself says, laziness did not allow her to write too many books. None of them have been translated into Polish. So I hope it will catch up soon after this documentary!
Everyone should watch this movie. With no exception!
